Dessa AI vs ChatGPT Voice (GPT-Live): Speech-Only vs Text-First

2026-10-28 · 7 min read · By DessaAI Daily

If you have used ChatGPT's voice mode, you already know the best voice AI most people can actually try today. Block's Dessa, announced October 23, 2026, is trying to do something different — not just a better voice on top of a text model, but a model that never uses text at all. That difference sounds technical. In conversation, Block argues, it is everything.

This comparison uses only verified facts. Dessa is a research preview with no public access, no pricing and no API announced. OpenAI's voice offering — referred to by Block in its own demo as GPT-Live-1, and known to most users through ChatGPT Voice and OpenAI's realtime work — is available today. Availability alone may decide your choice for now, and we will be clear about that throughout.

How each system is built

ChatGPT Voice follows the path most voice assistants follow, even as OpenAI has tightened it: speech is understood, a powerful text-trained language model reasons, and speech is produced in reply. OpenAI's models learned from enormous amounts of written text, code and transcribed material, which gives them broad factual knowledge, strong reasoning and the ability to read, write and use tools.

Dessa deletes that middle. As we explained in how Dessa AI works, Block trained it from scratch on human conversation audio only — no text, no pretrained models. Everything it knows came from listening to people talk. Block says it learned language from hundreds of times fewer words than text large language models need, was trained on a single NVIDIA GB200 NVL72 system, and runs faster than real time locally on a MacBook Pro with an M4 Max chip or better.

Conversation feel: timing, laughter and interruption

Block's central claim is conversational timing. Dessa is full-duplex: it listens while it speaks, so it can backchannel with “yeah!” or “got it!”, laugh mid-sentence when something is funny, notice you starting to speak and yield, or choose to cut in itself. It hears and produces emotion, sarcasm and sighs, and it adjusts its volume when asked — a behavior Block says nobody explicitly taught it.

Modern ChatGPT Voice is far more natural than older assistants, and OpenAI has steadily reduced the walkie-talkie feel. But a system rooted in text still has to translate feeling into words and back again. Sarcasm, hesitation and a crack in your voice are data in Dessa's world; in a text pipeline they risk becoming punctuation, or disappearing entirely. Block's demo that best makes the point is also its boldest: a published conversation between Dessa and GPT-Live-1, with Block noting OpenAI is not affiliated with Dessa and has not endorsed it. Two systems talking to each other makes the contrast in cadence easier to hear than any spec sheet.

Knowledge, facts and tools

Here ChatGPT Voice holds a clear, structural advantage — at least on what we know today. A text-trained model has read books, manuals, documentation and the web. It can write code, summarize a document you paste, browse when enabled, and call tools. Dessa has, by design, never read a book or a webpage. Block has published no benchmarks, no parameter count and no evaluation of factual accuracy, so no honest comparison can claim Dessa matches ChatGPT on knowledge work.

That is not a flaw Block hides; it is the research question. Can a model that learned only from conversation develop useful knowledge and reasoning from speech alone, the way a person who learns by listening does? The demos show fluency, sentence-finishing and social awareness. They do not yet show the kind of precise, checkable, tool-using work people now expect from ChatGPT.

Privacy and where the audio goes

Block says Dessa's inference runs locally on high-end consumer hardware. Local running, if it reaches users in that form, would mean conversation audio does not have to leave the device for the model to respond — a meaningful difference from cloud voice services, where audio is processed on a provider's servers under that provider's policies. Block has not announced a product form, phone support or deployment details, so treat local inference as a demonstrated capability, not a shipping promise. Price and availability

ChatGPT Voice is available now through ChatGPT, with OpenAI also offering realtime voice to developers at published rates. Dessa has no price, no paid tier, no API and no public release date announced. Joining the waitlist at block.xyz/dessa is free, and early access goes first to a small group of AI safety researchers. Anyone selling you Dessa access today is not Block.

Which should you use?

Use ChatGPT Voice today if you need a voice assistant that can answer questions, work with text and documents, and be used right now. Watch Dessa if you care about where conversation itself is going: a voice that does not just say the right words, but says them at the right moment, in the right tone, while still listening to you. The honest verdict is asymmetrical — one is a product, the other is a research preview making a serious scientific claim. If that claim holds up under independent testing, the comparison in a year will look very different.

Frequently asked questions

Is Dessa AI better than ChatGPT Voice?

It depends on the test. Dessa is designed for more natural timing, emotion and interruption handling because it was trained only on speech. ChatGPT Voice is available today and is backed by a text-trained model with far broader documented knowledge and tools. Dessa has no published benchmarks yet.

Can I use Dessa AI instead of ChatGPT Voice today?

No. Dessa is a research preview with a waitlist and early access for safety researchers first. Block has announced no public release date, pricing or API.

Did Dessa really talk to GPT-Live-1?

Yes — Block published a conversation between Dessa and OpenAI's GPT-Live-1 as a demo, while noting OpenAI is not affiliated with Dessa and has not endorsed it.
